چکیده

Cemented paste backfill structures are complex underground cementitious structures. After fresh cemented paste backfill (CPB; a mix of tailings, binder and water) is poured into underground stopes (mined-out voids), its strength which is a key mechanical design criterion of CPB structures, gradually develops with time. The development of CPB strength is governed by the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in the CPB mass. Therefore, to assess and predict the changes to CPB strength and its distribution within the CPB mass, a multiphysics model on CPB strength is proposed in this study, and has been successfully validated against a series of experimental data. Then, the validated model is used to investigate the changes in the strength of CPB structure under various influential factors in the field (e.g., backfilling strategy, inclination angle of stope, and filling rate). The obtained results provide better insight into the process of the strength increase and spatial distribution in CPB structures as well as contribute to more cost-effective engineering designs of CPB structures.

Pore Structure Evolution and Its Effect on Strength Development of Sulfate-Containing Cemented Paste Backfill

In this study, the effects of the initial sulfate content on the properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB) made from coarse tailings has been investigated via mercury intrusion porosimetry. The combined effects of the sulfate content and curing time on the total porosity, pore size distribution, and unconfined compressive strength of the produced material were discussed. It was found that the...

Strength Characteristics and Failure Mechanism of Cemented Super-Fine Unclassified Tailings Backfill

This experimental study investigates the strength characteristics of cemented super-fine unclassified tailings backfill (CSUTB) and its failure mechanism. Physical and chemical properties of tailings from the Zhongguan Iron Mine (ZGIM) were tested. A series of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests was conducted to determine the relationships between UCS of CSUTB and three factors of cement-...

Feasibility of Recycling Ultrafine Leaching Residue by Backfill: Experimental and CFD Approaches

Large amounts of leaching residue are released into tailings dams from mines, and their acid content can cause environmental pollution. The aim of this study was to research the feasibility and value of a leaching residue backfill recycling method. The combination of property detection, laboratory tests (the neutralization method, strength test and diffusivity test) and numerical simulation met...

Modeling mechanical response of cemented EPS-backfill

Cemented backfill is one of geomaterials which is used at a high volume to serve a variety of geo-infrastructure systems, e.g., embankments, retaining walls and approach abutments, and involves the solidification of soil or similar fine aggregate through the addition of a controlled amount of cementitious materials, such as Portland cement, fly ash or lime. A certain volume of expanded polystyr...

Rheological Properties of Cemented Tailing Backfill and the Construction of a Prediction Model

Workability is a key performance criterion for mining cemented tailing backfill, which should be defined in terms of rheological parameters such as yield stress and plastic viscosity. Cemented tailing backfill is basically composed of mill tailings, Portland cement, or blended cement with supplementary cement material (fly ash and blast furnace slag) and water, among others, and it is important...
